What is an Implement Yoke?
The efficient operation of agricultural and industrial machinery relies on a network of interconnected components. One critical piece of this network is the implement yoke, responsible for transmitting power from a tractor or engine to various implements and equipment.
What Does an Implement Yoke Do?
An implement yoke acts as a bridge between the power source (tractor, engine) and the implement (mower, tiller, etc.). Typically yokes are used in the Power take-off (PTO). It connects the drive shaft of the power source to the input shaft of the implement, allowing for the smooth and efficient transfer of rotational power.
Types of Implement Yokes
At MDS of Michigan, we offer two main types of implement yokes: Round Bore Yokes and Hex Bore Yokes
Hex shafts and round keyed shafts are two common types of shafts used in power transmission applications. Both offer unique advantages and are suitable for various applications.
Round Bore Yokes
These yokes feature a circular opening designed to fit a specific round keyed shafts. They can be used with a variety of components and configurations. Keyways can be customized to accommodate different torque requirements and shaft sizes. However, the presence of a keyway can potentially introduce additional stress points and reduce the shaft’s strength compared to a solid hex shaft. – Click Here to Learn More
Hex Bore Yokes
These yokes have a hexagonal opening that provides a secure fit on a hexagonal shaft. The primary benefit of choosing a hex bore yoke is that there is no key needed. Which means no key to fall out at an inopportune time and no keyway to cut which saves machining time. Hex shafts provide a direct mechanical connection, eliminating the need for additional components like keys and keyways. This direct connection enhances torque capacity and reduces wear and tear. Hex shafts are relatively simple to install and align.
Our team has found hex shafting challenging to work with due to its lack of popularity, primarily because motors generally do not use hex shafts. The main issue is that the hexagonal shape can cause motor runout, a slight wobble or eccentricity during rotation. Because motors typically do not use them, it is difficult to find compatible parts like bearings and hubs. – Click Here to Learn More
Industries that Use Implement Yokes
Implement yokes are essential components in numerous industries, including:
- Agriculture: Powering various implements like mowers, tillers, planters, and balers.
- Construction: Connecting power sources to hydraulic pumps, winches, and other equipment for excavation, lifting, and material handling.
- Industrial Manufacturing: Enabling power transmission in various processes like conveyor belts, mixing equipment, and assembly lines.
